There Is A Gnome Being Kidnapped In My Bird Sanctuary!

A few weeks ago we found some decorative pea pebbles on a clearance sale and have used them in a couple of areas of the yard. One of the areas that got a few bags of these little pebbles is my small rock garden / bird sanctuary that I told you about a while back. That really helped to fill in the area nicely and just today the mail lady brought my two new garden gnomes! They are so cute!

The bigger one is a gnome who has been tied up and is being carried off by two little chipmunks and the smaller one is a brightly colored mushroom with two little gnomes spinning around above it. Too cute.

I decided that since I can’t seem to get much of anything to grow in this yard I’d add some color with these little guys and in the spring I’ll put some flowers in pots too. That will be much nicer than the old boring yard we’ve been living with.

Just for fun I did a quick search (go Google!) to see if I could find out where the idea of a garden gnome came from. Here’s what I found…

–A gnome/ˈnoʊm/ is a diminutive spirit in Renaissance magic and alchemy, first introduced by Paracelsus and later adopted by more recent authors including those of modern fantasy literature. Its characteristics have been reinterpreted to suit the needs of various story-tellers, but it is typically said to be a small, humanoid creature that lives underground. Paracelsus classifies them as earth elementals. He describes them as two spans high, very reluctant to interact with humans, and able to move through solid earth as easily as humans move through air. The chthonic spirit has precedents in numerous ancient and medieval mythologies, often guarding mines and precious underground treasures. [wikipedia]

–Gnomes originate from the land of fairy tales and from there they bring the wisdom of cheerful happiness, prosperity of nature, and modesty. Their power and cleverness are often described as superhuman  and are said to have knowledge of hidden treasures and foresite of the future. [Zwergli]

Interesting; but I just think there cute and colorful.

Have a great night everyone!
