Ride A Painted Pony

…Someone is waiting just for you
spinning wheel is spinning true.
Drop all your troubles, by the river side.
Ride a painted pony
let the spinning wheel fly.

No; I didn’t ride the carousel but I had just as much fun as the kids who did!

This vintage carousel was built in 1908 by the Herschell-Spillman Co. of New York. It includes a 1909 Wurlitzer band organ and was purchased by the city of Topeka in 1986.

The carousel currently operating in Gage Park is one of less than 200 original American carousels still in operation.

I’ve have walked by the building that it is safely housed in many times but this was the first time I managed to catch it open and running. I think I had just as good of a time as the kids, and adults, who actually took a ride on these painted ponies.
