The Longest Sculpted Brick Mural In The US

On a recent visit to Concordia, Kansas D and I took a few minutes to check out a unique site. The longest sculpted brick mural in the US. The project was titled Cloud Anthologies by the artist Catharine Magel. Catharine began work on the mural in February of 2007 and finished carving the last brick in April of 2008.

Brick masons started placing the bricks for the mural in April of 2009 and finished laying the last carved brick in June of the same year.

If you happen to be traveling through Cloud County, along US highway 81, this summer be sure to mark Concordia on your map and take a moment to stop. This is one amazing piece of artwork that just can’t be captured in one or two photos.

You’ve got to see this one for yourself.

  1. Just watch for it as you drive through town. If the sun is at the wrong angle it’s easy to miss; it will just look like a brick wall. But when the sun hits it just right and those shadows come out… Awesome.
