On a recent visit to Concordia, Kansas D and I took a few minutes to check out a unique site. The longest sculpted brick mural in the US. The project was titled Cloud Anthologies by the artist Catharine Magel. Catharine began work on the mural in February of 2007 and finished carving the last brick in April of 2008.
Brick masons started placing the bricks for the mural in April of 2009 and finished laying the last carved brick in June of the same year.
The mural was carved onto over 6,000 individual clay blocks which were then fired into the hardened bricks that now stand as the finished mural. This mural is 140 feet long and at it’s highest point stands 20 feet tall.
If you happen to be traveling through Cloud County, along US highway 81, this summer be sure to mark Concordia on your map and take a moment to stop. This is one amazing piece of artwork that just can’t be captured in one or two photos.
You’ve got to see this one for yourself.
